Eugenijus Ališanka, b. 1960, Barnaul/Russia, grew up in Lithuania and studied mathematics at the University of Vilnius. Between 1994 and 2002, he organized the international poetry festival “Poetry Spring”. From 2003 to 2015, he was editor-in-chief of the magazine Vilnius Review, which features Lithuanian literature in English and Russian translation.

Ališanka has published six poetry collections, three collections of essays and numerous poetry translations of international authors into Lithuanian. English translations of his work include City of Ash (1995, Eng. 2000) and from unwritten histories (2002, Eng. 2011). Ališankas’s poems are marked by their mathematical structure, clear perspective and restrained tone. In his poetry, he takes on the guise of a traveller roaming throughout Europe in search of an identity that is both European and Lithuanian in equal measure.

The author’s awards include the Literature Prize of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania, and residency fellowships at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program.
